What is Fraction to Percentage Conversion?

Fraction to percentage conversion expresses a fraction as a value out of 100. The standard formula is: Percentage = (Numerator ÷ Denominator) × 100%.

For a fraction a/b, multiply a by 100 and divide the result by b. Thus, 3/5 = (3 ÷ 5) × 100% = 60%. The fraction and its percentage represent the same quantity in different forms.

Fraction to Percentage Conversion Formula & Tricks

Important Formulas

Basic fraction to percentage formula
Percentage = (Numerator ÷ Denominator) × 100%

Divide the numerator by the denominator, multiply by 100, and write the percent sign.

Equivalent fraction method
a/b = (a × k)/(b × k)

Choose k so that the denominator becomes 100, when possible. The new numerator gives the percentage value.

Mixed number conversion
Mixed number = Improper fraction; Percentage = (Improper fraction) × 100%

Convert a mixed number into an improper fraction before applying the percentage formula.

Quick Tricks

Make the denominator 100

If the denominator can be changed to 100 by multiplication, multiply both numerator and denominator by the same number.

Example: 3/25 = (3 × 4)/(25 × 4) = 12/100 = 12%.
Use denominator values related to 100

For denominators such as 2, 4, 5, 10, 20, 25, 50 and 100, convert directly by scaling the denominator to 100.

Example: 7/8 = 87.5/100 = 87.5% because 8 × 12.5 = 100.
Convert familiar fractions directly

Remember common equivalents to reduce calculation time, such as 1/2 = 50%, 1/4 = 25%, 1/5 = 20% and 3/4 = 75%.

Example: 5/8 = 5 × 12.5 = 62.5%.

Fraction to Percentage Conversion Concepts

Direct Division Method

Divide the numerator by the denominator and multiply the quotient by 100.

For a fraction a/b, calculate (a ÷ b) × 100%. This method works for every fraction, including fractions whose denominators do not convert conveniently to 100.

Example: For 7/16: (7 ÷ 16) × 100% = 0.4375 × 100% = 43.75%.

Equivalent Fraction with Denominator 100

When the denominator can be scaled to 100, form an equivalent fraction with 100 as the denominator.

Multiply both numerator and denominator by the same factor. If b × k = 100, then a/b = (a × k)/100 = a × k%. This method is usually faster than long division.

Example: 9/20 = (9 × 5)/(20 × 5) = 45/100 = 45%.

Simplifying Before Conversion

A fraction may be simplified first, but its percentage value remains unchanged.

Divide the numerator and denominator by their common factor, then apply the fraction to percentage formula. Simplification reduces the numbers used in the calculation.

Example: 18/24 = 3/4 after division by 6. Therefore, 18/24 = 3/4 = 75%.

Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers

An improper fraction can produce a percentage above 100%, while a mixed number must first be changed into an improper fraction.

For a mixed number m a/b, convert it to (mb + a)/b. Then multiply by 100%. A fraction greater than 1 always has a percentage greater than 100%.

Example: 2 1/4 = (2 × 4 + 1)/4 = 9/4. Therefore, 2 1/4 = (9/4) × 100% = 225%.

Recurring and Decimal Percentages

Fractions such as 1/3 and 5/6 give recurring percentages when divided exactly.

Retain the exact fractional form when required, or use a suitable decimal approximation. For example, 1/3 = 33 1/3% and 5/6 = 83 1/3%.

Example: 5/6 × 100% = 500/6% = 83 1/3%.

Fraction to Percentage Conversion: Quick Revision

Use these formulas and rules to convert fractions accurately into percentages.

  • Use Percentage = (Numerator ÷ Denominator) × 100%.
  • Multiply both terms by the same number when changing the denominator to 100.
  • Simplify the fraction before conversion if a common factor is available.
  • A fraction equal to 1 gives 100%; a fraction greater than 1 gives more than 100%.
  • Convert a mixed number into an improper fraction before applying the formula.
  • 1/2 = 50%, 1/4 = 25%, 1/5 = 20%, 3/4 = 75% and 1/8 = 12.5%.
  • Fractions such as 1/3 and 5/6 produce recurring percentages: 33 1/3% and 83 1/3%, respectively.
