How to Calculate Percentage of Marks

How to Calculate Percentage of Marks requires dividing the marks obtained by the total maximum marks and multiplying the result by 100. This page explains the marks percentage formula, calculation for multiple subjects, conversion of percentage into marks, rounding rules and quick methods used in exam calculations.

What Is the Percentage of Marks?

Percentage of marks is the marks obtained expressed out of 100. It is calculated by dividing obtained marks by maximum marks and multiplying by 100.

Use the same unit for both values, such as marks and marks. For example, if a student scores 375 out of 500, the percentage is (375 ÷ 500) × 100 = 75%. The maximum marks form the denominator because they represent the complete score.

How to Calculate Percentage of Marks Formula & Tricks

Important Formulas

Marks percentage formula
Percentage = (Marks obtained ÷ Total maximum marks) × 100

Divide the marks obtained by the total maximum marks, then multiply the quotient by 100.

Percentage from multiple subjects
Percentage = (Sum of marks obtained in all subjects ÷ Sum of maximum marks in all subjects) × 100

Add the marks and maximum marks separately before applying the percentage formula.

Marks from a given percentage
Marks obtained = (Percentage ÷ 100) × Total maximum marks

Convert the percentage into a fraction of 1 and multiply it by the total maximum marks.

Quick Tricks

Cancel common zeros before multiplying

When the obtained marks and total marks contain zeros, cancel common factors first to simplify the calculation.

Example: For 420 out of 600, (420 ÷ 600) × 100 = (42 ÷ 60) × 100 = 70%.
Use the fraction equivalent of common percentages

Convert familiar percentages into fractions to calculate quickly. For example, 25% = 1/4, 50% = 1/2 and 75% = 3/4.

Example: 75% of 800 = 3/4 × 800 = 600 marks.
Find the shortfall from 100%

If the obtained marks are close to the total marks, calculate the lost marks first and subtract their percentage from 100.

Example: For 480 out of 500, the loss is 20 marks. Loss percentage = 20/500 × 100 = 4%, so the score percentage is 96%.

How to Calculate Percentage of Marks Concepts

Calculating Percentage from Obtained and Maximum Marks

Divide the obtained marks by the maximum marks and multiply by 100.

The maximum marks must be used as the denominator. If the score is 68 out of 80, percentage = (68 ÷ 80) × 100 = 85%. The result is generally written with the percentage symbol (%).

Example: Marks obtained = 432 and maximum marks = 600. Percentage = (432 ÷ 600) × 100 = 72%.

Percentage for Several Subjects

For several subjects, add all obtained marks and all maximum marks separately, then apply the formula.

Do not calculate separate percentages and take their simple average unless every subject has the same maximum marks. With unequal maximum marks, the combined percentage is based on total obtained marks divided by total maximum marks.

Example: Scores are 70/100, 80/100 and 45/50. Total = 195/250, so percentage = (195 ÷ 250) × 100 = 78%.

Converting Percentage into Marks

To find marks corresponding to a percentage, multiply the total marks by the percentage divided by 100.

This is the reverse of the marks percentage formula. For a total of 750 marks, 64% corresponds to (64 ÷ 100) × 750 = 480 marks.

Example: A student scores 82% in an examination of 500 marks. Marks obtained = 82/100 × 500 = 410.

Rounding the Calculated Percentage

Round a percentage only after completing the calculation, unless the question specifies a different rule.

For example, 257 out of 400 gives 64.25%. To the nearest whole number, it becomes 64% because the decimal part is 0.25. A result such as 64.75% rounds to 65% to the nearest whole number.

Example: 263 out of 400 = 65.75%, which is 65.8% to one decimal place and 66% to the nearest whole number.

How to Calculate Percentage of Marks FAQs

What is the marks percentage formula?

Percentage of marks = (Marks obtained ÷ Total maximum marks) × 100.

How do I calculate the percentage for 360 marks out of 450?

Percentage = (360 ÷ 450) × 100 = 80%.

How is percentage calculated for different subjects?

Add the marks obtained in all subjects, add their maximum marks, and use: (Total obtained marks ÷ Total maximum marks) × 100.

Can I average the percentages of different subjects?

You can take a simple average only when all subjects have equal maximum marks. For unequal maximum marks, calculate the combined percentage from total marks.

How many marks are needed for 75% of 800 marks?

Required marks = 75/100 × 800 = 600 marks.

What percentage is 425 out of 500?

(425 ÷ 500) × 100 = 85%.
