Double Pie Chart Data Interpretation with Comparisons
Double Pie Chart Data Interpretation involves reading two pie charts and comparing category-wise percentages, ratios, angles or quantities. The charts may represent two years, groups, companies or locations. Solve questions by converting sector angles into percentages or actual values, then applying comparison, difference, ratio and percentage-change formulas.

What is Double Pie Chart Data Interpretation?
For a sector with angle θ, its percentage is θ/360 × 100, and its value is θ/360 × total. If percentages are given directly, use percentage/100 × total. The two pies may have different totals, so compare actual values only after using the correct total for each pie.

Double Pie Chart Data Interpretation Formula & Tricks
Important Formulas
Use θ as the central angle of a sector in a pie chart.
Multiply the sector fraction by the total represented by that pie.
Use this when the chart gives percentages instead of angles.
Use the first data set as the base when comparing its change to the second data set.
Convert both category shares into actual values before forming the ratio if the two pie totals differ.
Quick Tricks
Remember that 90° = 25%, 72° = 20%, 60° = 16⅔%, 45° = 12.5%, and 36° = 10%.
If both pies represent the same total, the ratio of corresponding category values equals the ratio of their sector angles or percentages.
A larger percentage does not always mean a larger quantity when the two pies have different totals.
Double Pie Chart Data Interpretation Concepts
Reading percentages and angles
For a sector angle θ, divide θ by 360 and multiply by 100 to obtain its percentage. Conversely, the angle for p% is (p/100) × 360°. A sector of 108° represents 30% because 108/360 × 100 = 30%.
Finding actual values from two pies
Use Category value = share × total. For Pie 1 and Pie 2, do not use one pie's total for the other. If Category C is 20% of 2,400 in Pie 1, its value is 480; if it is 30% of 3,000 in Pie 2, its value is 900.
Comparing corresponding categories
For difference, subtract the two actual values. For ratio, write the values in the required order and simplify. For percentage change, divide the change by the original value, not the new value.
Comparing categories within one pie
If two sectors are 25% and 20%, their value ratio is 25:20 = 5:4. If the total is known, calculate both values first when the question asks for an absolute difference.
Double Pie Chart Data Interpretation Visual Guide & Data
Use the table and chart below to understand the data better.
Source data for a double pie chart
Percentage distribution of expenditure across four departments in two years.
| Department | Year 1 (%) | Year 2 (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Research | 25 | 20 |
| Production | 30 | 25 |
| Marketing | 20 | 30 |
| Administration | 25 | 25 |
Note: Each column totals 100%. If Year 1 total expenditure is ₹2,400 and Year 2 total expenditure is ₹3,000, the percentages can be converted into actual amounts.

Double Pie Chart Revision Points
Use the correct pie total and convert sectors into percentages or actual quantities before comparing data.
- One complete pie equals 360° or 100%.
- Percentage from angle = angle/360 × 100.
- Actual value = sector share × corresponding pie total.
- Use separate totals when the two pies represent different quantities.
- For percentage change, use the original value as the denominator.
- For equal totals, ratios of values equal ratios of angles or percentages.
- Verify that all sector angles total 360° and all percentages total 100%.
Double Pie Chart Data Interpretation FAQs
What is the formula for percentage from a pie-chart angle?
Percentage = (Sector angle/360°) × 100. For example, 90° represents (90/360) × 100 = 25%.
How do you find an angle when the percentage is given?
Angle = (Percentage/100) × 360°. Thus, a 15% sector has angle 0.15 × 360° = 54°.
How do you calculate a category value from a double pie chart?
Multiply the category percentage by the total of its own pie. For example, 30% of ₹3,000 is ₹900.
Can percentages from two pies be compared directly?
Yes, for comparing shares. For comparing actual quantities, first multiply each percentage by its respective pie total, especially when the totals differ.
What is the actual value of Marketing in the sample data?
Marketing is 20% of ₹2,400 in Year 1, so its value is ₹480. It is 30% of ₹3,000 in Year 2, so its value is ₹900.
What is the percentage increase in Marketing expenditure in the sample data?
The increase is ₹900 − ₹480 = ₹420. Percentage increase = 420/480 × 100 = 87.5%.
