How to Solve Caselet Data Interpretation Step by Step?
Caselet Data Interpretation presents numerical information in a paragraph instead of a ready-made chart or table. You must extract the data, organise it, and apply arithmetic, percentage, ratio or average formulas to answer the questions. This page explains the calculation method, common formulas, useful shortcuts and solved caselet-based examples.

What is Caselet Data Interpretation?
First convert the paragraph into a small table or list. Then identify the required quantities and apply the relevant operation. For example, if a shop sells 120 pens at ₹10 each and 80 notebooks at ₹25 each, total revenue is (120 × 10) + (80 × 25) = ₹3,200.

Caselet Data Interpretation Formula & Tricks
Important Formulas
Use this when the caselet asks for one quantity as a percentage of the total or another reference quantity.
A positive result indicates an increase, while a negative result indicates a decrease.
Add all relevant values and divide by their count.
Write the ratio as A:B and reduce both terms by their greatest common divisor.
For multiple items, calculate each quantity-rate product and add the products.
The original value is obtained by dividing the final value by the applicable multiplier.
Quick Tricks
Write each category in one row and each quantity in a separate column. This prevents values belonging to different categories from being mixed.
If several questions use the same total, find it before solving individual questions. Keep units unchanged until the final comparison.
Convert familiar percentages into fractions to reduce calculation time: 25% = 1/4, 20% = 1/5, 12.5% = 1/8 and 33⅓% = 1/3.
Convert quantities to the same unit before addition, subtraction or ratio calculation. For example, convert thousands into actual numbers or litres into millilitres when required.
Caselet Data Interpretation Concepts
Extracting data from a caselet
Mark words such as total, remaining, increased, decreased, each, per person and respectively. A number may represent a quantity, rate, percentage or total, so its associated phrase must be recorded. Arrange the information in rows before calculating.
Finding totals and subtotals
Do not add unlike quantities such as units and rupees. For a category with quantity q and rate p, the amount is q × p. The grand total is the sum of all category amounts.
Percentage and percentage-change questions
The denominator changes with the wording. The share of A in the total uses A ÷ total, while the percentage increase from A to B uses (B − A) ÷ A. The original value is the denominator for percentage change.
Ratios and comparisons
For A = 84 and B = 126, the ratio A:B is 84:126 = 2:3 after division by 42. A difference gives an absolute comparison, whereas a ratio or percentage gives a relative comparison.
Multi-step caselet calculations
Follow the order stated in the caselet. For a discount followed by tax, calculate the discounted price first and apply tax to that price. For a total followed by a percentage allocation, find the total before calculating each share.
Caselet Data Interpretation Data Table
Use the structured data below while following the explanation and examples.
Source data for a caselet example
A shop records the units sold and selling price per unit for four products.
| Product | Units sold | Selling price per unit (₹) |
|---|---|---|
| A | 120 | 10 |
| B | 80 | 25 |
| C | 150 | 12 |
| D | 50 | 30 |
Note: Revenue by product is found by multiplying units sold by selling price per unit.

Caselet Data Interpretation Revision Points
Use these rules while converting and solving paragraph-based data.
- Convert the paragraph into a table before performing calculations.
- Record every value with its category and unit.
- Total amount = Quantity × Rate.
- Percentage = (Part ÷ Whole) × 100.
- Percentage change uses the original value as the denominator.
- Average = Sum of observations ÷ Number of observations.
- Reduce ratios only after converting quantities to the same units.
- After an r% increase, Original = Final ÷ (1 + r/100). After an r% decrease, Original = Final ÷ (1 − r/100).
Caselet Data Interpretation FAQs
How is a caselet different from a table-based DI set?
A caselet gives the data in paragraph form, so the solver must extract and organise it. In table-based DI, the values are already arranged in rows and columns.
What is the formula for percentage in Caselet Data Interpretation?
Percentage = (Required part ÷ Relevant whole) × 100. For example, 45 out of 180 is (45 ÷ 180) × 100 = 25%.
How do you calculate total revenue from a caselet?
Multiply the quantity of each product by its price and add the results. For 120 units at ₹10 and 80 units at ₹25, revenue = ₹1,200 + ₹2,000 = ₹3,200.
How is percentage increase calculated when values change from 240 to 300?
Increase = 300 − 240 = 60. Percentage increase = (60 ÷ 240) × 100 = 25%.
What is the original value if a final value follows a 20% increase?
Original value = Final value ÷ 1.20. Thus, if the final value is 600, the original value is 600 ÷ 1.20 = 500.
How do you find the average of values extracted from a caselet?
Add the values and divide by their number. The average of 24, 30 and 36 is (24 + 30 + 36) ÷ 3 = 30.
