What Are Reverse Pie Chart Problems?

Reverse pie chart problems require finding the total quantity or missing sector values when a pie chart gives sector angles or percentages and the value of at least one sector.

A complete pie represents 360° or 100%. If a sector has angle θ and represents a value V, then its fraction of the total is θ/360. Therefore, Total = V × 360/θ. If the sector is given as p%, then Total = V × 100/p. After finding the total, any sector value is calculated using its angle or percentage.

Reverse Pie Chart Problems Formula & Tricks

Important Formulas

Angle to sector fraction
Sector fraction = θ/360

A sector with angle θ occupies θ/360 of the complete pie.

Angle to percentage
Sector percentage = (θ/360) × 100 = 5θ/18%

Multiply the sector angle by 100/360 to convert it into a percentage.

Find total from a known angle sector
Total = Known sector value × 360/θ

Use this when the value of a sector and its angle θ are given.

Find total from a known percentage sector
Total = Known sector value × 100/p

Use this when the known sector represents p% of the total.

Find a missing sector value
Sector value = Total × θ/360 = Total × p/100

Multiply the total by the sector fraction represented by the angle or percentage.

Quick Tricks

Use angle ratios instead of converting every angle

For sectors in the same pie chart, their values are directly proportional to their angles. If one sector of θ° has value V, another sector of α° has value V × α/θ.

Example: If 90° represents ₹12,000, then 150° represents ₹12,000 × 150/90 = ₹20,000.
Check the total angle before calculating

The sector angles of a complete pie chart must add to 360°. If percentages are used, they must add to 100%.

Example: Angles 90°, 120°, 60° and 90° add to 360°, so they form a complete pie chart.
Convert common angles quickly

Useful angle percentages include 36° = 10%, 45° = 12.5%, 72° = 20%, 90° = 25%, 120° = 33⅓% and 180° = 50%.

Example: A 90° sector is one-fourth of the total. If it represents ₹15,000, the total is ₹15,000 × 4 = ₹60,000.

Reverse Pie Chart Problems Concepts

Converting a Sector Angle into a Percentage

A sector angle is converted to a percentage by multiplying it by 100/360.

For a sector of θ°, Percentage = θ/360 × 100. For example, 54° represents 54/360 × 100 = 15% of the total. The angle and percentage describe the same portion of the pie chart.

Example: A 72° sector represents 72/360 × 100 = 20%.

Finding the Total from One Known Sector

Find the total by dividing the known sector value by its fraction of the pie.

If a sector of θ° has value V, its fraction is θ/360. Hence, Total = V ÷ (θ/360) = V × 360/θ. The same method with a percentage p is Total = V × 100/p.

Example: If 120° represents ₹18,000, Total = ₹18,000 × 360/120 = ₹54,000.

Finding Other Sector Values

Once the total is known, multiply it by the required sector's angle fraction or percentage.

For a sector of α°, its value is Total × α/360. Alternatively, if one known sector has angle θ and value V, the required value can be found directly as V × α/θ.

Example: With a total of ₹54,000, a 90° sector has value ₹54,000 × 90/360 = ₹13,500.

Solving a Reverse Pie Chart with a Known Percentage

When one sector's percentage and value are given, divide the value by that percentage fraction to obtain the total.

Use Total = Known value × 100/p. Then subtract known sector values from the total or apply each remaining sector's percentage. All sector percentages must sum to 100%.

Example: If 25% of a quantity is 8,000, the total is 8,000 × 100/25 = 32,000. A 15% sector is therefore 4,800.

Reverse Pie Chart Problems Visual Guide & Data

Use the table and chart below to understand the data better.

Reverse Pie Chart Source Data

The pie chart uses the sector-angle column. The amount column is calculated from the known 120° sector valued at ₹18,000.

Category Sector angle (°) Amount (₹)
Food 120 18000
Rent 90 13500
Education 60 9000
Transport 90 13500

Note: The angles total 360° and the amounts total ₹54,000. Since 120° represents ₹18,000, the total is ₹18,000 × 360/120 = ₹54,000.

Reverse Pie Chart Problems: Revision Points

Use the complete-circle relationships to work backwards from a known sector value.

  • A complete pie chart represents 360° or 100%.
  • Sector fraction = angle/360; sector percentage = angle/360 × 100.
  • Total = known sector value × 360/known angle.
  • Total = known sector value × 100/known percentage.
  • Any sector value = total × angle/360 or total × percentage/100.
  • Values of sectors are proportional to their sector angles.
  • Check that all angles total 360° and all percentages total 100%.
  • Keep monetary units, people, kilograms or other units unchanged throughout the calculation.

Reverse Pie Chart Problems FAQs

What is the formula for finding the total in a reverse pie chart problem?

If a sector of θ° has value V, Total = V × 360/θ. If the sector is p%, Total = V × 100/p.

A 45° sector represents 6,000 units. What is the total?

45° is 45/360 = 1/8 of the pie. Therefore, total = 6,000 × 8 = 48,000 units.

How do you find the value of a 150° sector if a 60° sector is worth ₹8,000?

Values are proportional to angles. Required value = ₹8,000 × 150/60 = ₹20,000.

How is a pie-chart angle converted into a percentage?

Use Percentage = angle × 100/360. For example, 108° represents 108 × 100/360 = 30%.

What should be checked before solving a reverse pie chart question?

Check that all sector angles add to 360° or all percentages add to 100%. Also confirm that the known sector value and the required total use the same unit.

If 35% of the total is 14,000, what is the total and the value of a 20% sector?

Total = 14,000 × 100/35 = 40,000. The 20% sector is 40,000 × 20/100 = 8,000.
