Percentage Share in Table DI with Calculation Examples

Percentage Share in Table DI measures the contribution of one table entry to the relevant total. It is calculated by dividing the required value by the total value and multiplying by 100. This page covers row-wise and column-wise percentage share, comparison of shares, shortcuts, formulas and solved table-based examples.

What Is Percentage Share in Table DI?

Percentage share is the percentage contribution of a particular value to a specified total. The basic formula is Percentage Share = (Required Value ÷ Relevant Total) × 100.

The relevant total may be the total of a row, column, category or the entire table, depending on the question. For example, if a department records 80 units out of a total of 400 units, its percentage share is (80 ÷ 400) × 100 = 20%. The sum of all shares based on the same total is 100%.

Percentage Share in Table DI Formula & Tricks

Important Formulas

Basic percentage share
Percentage Share = (Required Value ÷ Relevant Total) × 100

Use the value named in the question as the numerator and the applicable row, column or grand total as the denominator.

Share of a row total
Row Share (%) = (Cell Value ÷ Row Total) × 100

Use this when each entry is compared with the total of its own row.

Share of a column total
Column Share (%) = (Cell Value ÷ Column Total) × 100

Use this when each entry is compared with the total of its own column.

Percentage-point difference
Difference in Shares = Share 1 − Share 2

Subtract the two percentage shares when the question asks how many percentage points one share exceeds another.

Percentage increase in share
Percentage Increase = ((New Share − Old Share) ÷ Old Share) × 100

Use this when the question asks for the percentage increase in a share, not merely the difference between two shares.

Quick Tricks

Simplify before multiplying by 100

Reduce the fraction formed by Required Value ÷ Total before converting it to a percentage. This avoids unnecessary decimal calculations.

Example: For 72 out of 240, 72 ÷ 240 = 3 ÷ 10, so the share is 30%.
Use the complement for the remaining share

If all categories use the same total, the share of the remaining categories is 100% minus the known share.

Example: If four categories together account for 68%, the remaining category has a 32% share.
Check the denominator from the wording

A percentage share may use a row total, column total or grand total. Do not use the grand total automatically.

Example: For a cell worth 40 in a row total of 160, the row share is 25%, even if the whole table total is different.

Percentage Share in Table DI Concepts

Calculating Share from a Table Total

To find the share of an entry, divide it by the relevant total and multiply by 100.

First identify the value asked for. Next calculate the total specified by the question. Apply Percentage Share = (Value ÷ Total) × 100. Keep the denominator and numerator from the same basis.

Example: If sales of Product B are 150 and total sales are 600, Product B's share is (150 ÷ 600) × 100 = 25%.

Row-Wise and Column-Wise Share

Row-wise share uses the row total, while column-wise share uses the column total.

For a cell at the intersection of a category and a year, select the denominator according to the wording. A row percentage describes the cell's contribution to that category total; a column percentage describes its contribution to that year's total.

Example: If a cell contains 30, its row total is 120 and its column total is 150, the row share is 25% and the column share is 20%.

Percentage Share Using a Grand Total

When the question compares every entry with the complete table data, use the grand total as the denominator.

The grand total is obtained by adding all relevant entries, or by adding row totals or column totals once. Do not add both row totals and column totals, because that counts every entry twice.

Example: For values 120, 180, 240 and 60, the grand total is 600. The share of 180 is (180 ÷ 600) × 100 = 30%.

Comparing Two Percentage Shares

Two shares can be compared either by percentage-point difference or by percentage change, depending on the wording.

If one share is 40% and another is 25%, their difference is 15 percentage points. The percentage by which the first exceeds the second is (15 ÷ 25) × 100 = 60%, because the second share is the base.

Example: A share rising from 20% to 30% increases by 10 percentage points, but the percentage increase is (10 ÷ 20) × 100 = 50%.

Percentage Share in Table DI Revision Points

Use the relevant total as the denominator and express the resulting fraction as a percentage.

  • Percentage Share = (Required Value ÷ Relevant Total) × 100.
  • Use a row total for row-wise share and a column total for column-wise share.
  • Use the grand total only when the question refers to the complete table.
  • Shares calculated from the same total add up to 100%.
  • A percentage-point difference is direct subtraction; percentage change uses the original share as the denominator.
  • Do not count values twice when calculating a grand total from row totals or column totals.

Percentage Share in Table DI FAQs

What is the percentage share in Table DI formula?

Percentage Share = (Required Value ÷ Relevant Total) × 100. The relevant total may be a row total, column total or grand total.

How do you find the percentage share of 90 out of 360?

Percentage share = (90 ÷ 360) × 100 = 25%.

What is the percentage share of category B in the sample table?

Category B has value 180 and the grand total is 600. Its share is (180 ÷ 600) × 100 = 30%.

What is the difference between percentage share and percentage increase?

Percentage share compares a part with a total. Percentage increase compares the change in a value with its original value: ((New − Old) ÷ Old) × 100.

If a row contains 45 out of a row total of 180, what is its row-wise share?

Row-wise share = (45 ÷ 180) × 100 = 25%.

How do you calculate column-wise percentage share?

Divide the cell value by the total of its column and multiply by 100. For example, 50 out of a column total of 200 gives 25%.
