Date Matching in Calendar Using Day and Date Rules
Date Matching in Calendar determines when two dates fall on the same weekday or when two years have identical calendars. The method uses the seven-day cycle, odd days, leap-year rules and the number of leap days crossed. This page covers date matching formulas, full-calendar matching, shortcuts and solved aptitude examples.

What Is Date Matching in Calendar?
For dates in the same month, matching weekdays occur at intervals of 7 days, such as 4 March and 11 March. For the same date in different years, count the days between the two dates and reduce the total modulo 7. A common year contributes 1 odd day, while a leap year contributes 2 odd days when the interval crosses 29 February.

Date Matching in Calendar Formula & Tricks
Important Formulas
The two dates fall on the same weekday when their day difference is a multiple of 7.
Here, L is the number of leap years from Y through Z − 1. Each year contributes 1 odd day, and each included leap year contributes one extra odd day.
I equals 1 when the interval crosses 29 February and 0 otherwise. Thus, the shift is 2 if a leap day lies between the two dates; otherwise it is 1.
Both years must be common or both leap years, and their 1 January weekdays must be the same.
Quick Tricks
For dates in the same month or year, subtract the date numbers and divide by 7. A remainder of 0 means the weekdays match.
A leap year adds an extra odd day only when 29 February lies between the two dates being compared.
Matching 1 January alone is insufficient. A common year and a leap year cannot have identical calendars because February has different lengths.
After adding odd days across several years, divide the total by 7 and use only the remainder.
Date Matching in Calendar Concepts
Matching Dates Within a Month
The weekday cycle repeats every 7 days. Therefore, dates d and d + 7k have the same weekday whenever both dates exist in the month and k is an integer. The same rule applies to dates in a continuous sequence of days across months.
Odd-Day Method for Different Years
A common year has 365 days, which gives 1 odd day because 365 = 7 × 52 + 1. A leap year has 366 days, which gives 2 odd days. For a specific date, count the extra odd day only if the interval crosses 29 February.
Leap-Year Rule in Date Matching
Thus, 2024 is a leap year, 1900 is not a leap year, and 2000 is a leap year. The extra day is 29 February. It affects date matching only when that day lies between the dates being compared.
Matching the Complete Calendar of Two Years
The year type must be checked because a leap year contains 366 days while a common year contains 365 days. For forward comparison from year Y to year Z, calculate (Z − Y) plus the number of leap years from Y through Z − 1, and check whether the result is divisible by 7.
Finding a Date with a Required Weekday
If the known date has weekday index w and the target weekday has index t, the forward movement is (t − w) mod 7. Add this movement to the known date, while observing month lengths and February's 28 or 29 days.

Leap-Year Rules for Calendar Matching
Tests used to decide whether a year contributes an extra leap day.
| Year condition | Year type | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Divisible by 4 but not a century year | Leap year | 2024 |
| Divisible by 100 but not by 400 | Common year | 1900 |
| Divisible by 400 | Leap year | 2000 |
| Not divisible by 4 | Common year | 2023 |
Note: A leap year has 366 days and 2 odd days; a common year has 365 days and 1 odd day.

Date Matching in Calendar Revision Points
Use these rules to solve date matching calendar problems.
- The weekday cycle repeats after every 7 days.
- Dates separated by a multiple of 7 days have the same weekday.
- A common year contributes 1 odd day; a leap year contributes 2 odd days.
- For a particular date, count the extra leap-day effect only when 29 February lies between the compared dates.
- A full-calendar match requires both years to be of the same type and their 1 January weekdays to match.
- A year divisible by 100 is not leap unless it is also divisible by 400.
- Always reduce the total odd days modulo 7.
Date Matching in Calendar FAQs
What is the basic date matching in calendar formula?
Two dates have the same weekday when the number of days between them is congruent to 0 modulo 7. For the same date across years, add the annual shifts and any extra shift caused by a crossed 29 February.
What is the weekday shift from 1 March 2024 to 1 March 2025?
The shift is 1 day because the interval begins after 29 February 2024. If 1 March 2024 was Friday, 1 March 2025 was Saturday.
What is the weekday shift from 1 February 2024 to 1 February 2025?
The shift is 2 days because the interval crosses 29 February 2024. If 1 February 2024 was Thursday, 1 February 2025 was Saturday.
Can a common year and a leap year have the same complete calendar?
No. Even if both years begin on the same weekday, their calendars differ after February because a leap year contains 29 February.
How do you check whether two years have the same calendar?
Check that both years are either common or leap years, then calculate the shift between their 1 January weekdays. The complete calendars match when that shift is divisible by 7.
Which dates have the same weekday as 18 September in the same month?
The dates 11 September and 25 September have the same weekday as 18 September, because each differs from it by 7 days.
